February's Feathers

I had fun sewing this month's FMQ Challenge feather! Diane Gaudynski's instructions were fabulous (like always).

See more pictures on my blog.

Thanks for hosting a giveaway Wendy - so kind (like always too!) and such a great incentive!

Joanne's Day 14

Today I finished the feathered table runner.

I just had to finish quilting one end of it.

the back
This piece was really just a way for me to practice my regular feathers (my tutorial).

The table runner is all finished. It is 20½" x 41½".
Today was my last day of the challenge. I managed to finish 4 projects during the challenge (which is a bonus!).
It was wonderful getting so much FMQ done, and seeing every one else's work.

Joanne's Day 12 and 13

I finished up my sampler piece.

Day 12 I did some more echoing and "headbands".

Day 13 more echoing, string of pearls and "bouncing bananas".

It is all finished and I added the binding.
It has wool batting and I used all Aurifil #50 thread with a #80 Microtex needle. It is 12" x 21".
I go into more details of the quilting on my blog.

Just one day left of FMQ for me! I hope to finish of the feathers on the table runner tomorrow.

Joanne's Day 10 and 11

I am still working on the little sampler.

Day 10 - I finished up the coloured thread and started working on the background, with some echoing using beige thread.

Day 11 - I did some "Diane-shiko" - from Diane Guadynski on the bottom of the sampler.
I tried a marker that came with my machine. It is the first time I used it and I thought it was a marker that washed out, but it turned out it was a disappearing marker. I was racing to quilt before the lines disappeared.

The sampler so far. I used two layers of wool batting (which I wouldn't recommend and won't try again - the stitches were loopy sometimes because of the thickness), and that is why the non-quilted part is so puffy. It will all be flat in the end.

Every one is doing so well with the challenge. Great to see!

Joanne's Day 8 and 9

Day 8

Day 9

I have been working on a little (12" x 18") sample inspired by a free pattern from Ivory Spring.
I recently purchased a few Aurifil 50 wt grab bags from Tristan Threads and wanted to try something new to me - using different colours of thread. I still have a few more things to add to the sample.

Joanne's Day 5

Today I finished up the FMQ on the second applique block.

Joanne's Day 4

Today I McTavished the background on the second block.

I tried to be a bit "wilder" with the quilting design this time. I used Aurifil #50 thread and a Microtex needle, with wool batting.
Tomorrow I will add some quilting to the applique.

I am so pleased to see how every one is doing! Some amazing progress being made. Thank-you to all the participants!

Joanne's Day 3

I finished quilting one of the blocks today.

I decided to leave the flower centers puffy. I used Invisafil thread for the quilting on the applique pieces

This is the back, all Aurifil thread in the bobbin.

Joanne's Day 2

Quilting today was more fun.

I did some Mctavishing in the background of an applique block (as well as out-lining the applique). Using Aurifil thread and a #80 Microtex needle, with wool batting. I also slowed my machine down too.

Since this is a challenge - the challenge for me was trying to "tweak" how I stitch the design.

Usually I do a very even design (being neat and organized - there are other, not so nice words too! - is a curse sometimes), I would like my work to be more organic.

As I went along I tried being more free form - something I will try to keep working on.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Joanne's Challenge - Day 1

I have been doing just random, individual feathers on the table runner (like my tutorial).

I did add a wreath in one section, because I was getting tired of feathers. I think this project will be my "go to" project on days when I just have a few minutes to free motion quilt. I'll work on something more interesting tomorrow.

Joanne's Projects

I finally layered my projects for the challenge.

These are the duplicate blocks from the Granny's Hankie BOM. It will be good practice to see what I would like to quilt on the real quilt. I plan on turning them into pillows.

This is a Drunkard's Path table runner. The white fabric isn't the best quality, it was just something I had and wanted to use - the results are that it doesn't lay very flat. I layered it with wool batting, and I am planning on quilting it with all over feathers (like Wendy did on her brown quilt), I hope this will help with the unevenness.

I have some pretty Aurifil thread that matches. I haven't decided which colour I will use.

I plan on starting the challenge tomorrow.

Good luck to all the participants! And thank-you so much for joining in the fun.
