I've gone through 5 needles today. I tried speeding up the machine, slowing down (hmmm maybe need to slow down a little more) but they keep breaking. Suggestions?
That is no fun Sue! What type of thread are you using and needle size? Also, pull off a couple of feet of thread and cut it off - sometimes there's a glitch in the manufacturing process that causes lumpy thread that can jam in the needle. and I'm sure you have already tried this but completely re-thread your machine, pop the bobbin out, and make sure the thread pulls out counterclockwise when it's inserted.
Using Sulky rayon 40 wt on top and bottom. Changed to a different thread on top and the world was good again! Needle size was a stippling needle, 90/14.
My thought would be long stitches. The previous stitch pulls the thread, so if you're moving the fabric to the right, that will pull the needle to the right. Then, when the needle tries to go down again, it misses the hole, hits the needle plate and breaks. At least that's been my experience. The stitch length and the machine speed have to work in tandem.
